Backpacking
Yes, I love camping, but in my heart I know that I truly belong to backpacking. While car camping gives me the opportunity to get back to my roots and feel like a native without having to sacrifice all that much (other than walls and running water), backpacking is my one true love because it reconnects me with reality!
If you’ve ever really gotten to the bottom of things, looked at yourself and understood what you truly are, what you’ve been and what you’ll become, then you’ll absolutely adore the experience of backpacking. There’s no better way to experience being a human being, not for those of us who live in civilization that is. It’s the closest thing you can do to turning the clock back about 10,000 years and living like one of our ancestral ancestors.
Want to know what it felt like to be a nomad? Ever wondered what they thought about before the invention of agriculture, or the establishment of permanent dwellings? Have any interest in connecting with your most basic emotions, most authentic feelings and desires? Drop that iPhone and strap on some hiking boots. Cram some food into a pack, slap it on your pack and hit the trail with some buddies (or better yet, by yourself!).
Backpacking is the most grounding of all human experiences. They say there are three types of battles in classic literature – man vs. man, man vs. nature and man vs. himself. You’re guaranteed to pit yourself against at least two of those each and every time you hit the trail. And each time that you return to society, you’ll find yourself feeling a little more confident and a lot more relaxed.
Just be careful because once you get bitten by the backpacking bug, you might get a little bit restless. These adventures are not for the weak of heart!
